Equivalent Entry: A Diploma in Teacher Education or Adult Education with a minimum grade of B+ (or 60%) in two teaching subjects. Note that passes in Teaching Methodology courses will not be considered.

Bachelor of Education in Arts

Direct Entry: Two or more principal level passes in two arts teaching subjects at A-Level. Equivalent Entry: A Diploma in Education with an overall grade of B+ or an Adult Education Diploma from the Institute of Adult Education or ADEM with a minimum grade of B+. Passes in Teaching Methodology courses will not be considered.

Bachelor of Education in Science

Direct Entry: Two principal level passes at A-Level in Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, or Biology. Equivalent Entry: A Diploma in Education recognized by the UDSM Senate with an overall grade of B+ or higher in science subjects. Passes in Teaching Methodology courses will not be considered.

Bachelor of Science with Education

Direct Entry: Two principal level passes at A-Level in Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, Biology, or Geography. Equivalent Entry: An appropriate Diploma with a minimum average grade of B+. Passes in Teaching Methodology courses will not be considered.

Postgraduate Programs

Master of Arts with Education (MA. Ed.)

  • Direct Entry: A Bachelor’s degree in Education focusing on Arts subjects (e.g., B.A. (Ed.) or B.Ed. (Arts)) from an accredited institution with a minimum GPA of 2.7. Applicants interested in Language streams must have studied Linguistics, Kiswahili, French, English, or Literature during their undergraduate studies. For the Geography and History streams, applicants should have studied the respective subjects at the undergraduate level.
  • Equivalent Entry: A Bachelor’s degree (with a GPA of 2.7 or higher) in Kiswahili, Language Studies, English, Geography and Environmental Studies, French, Literature, or History, combined with a Postgraduate Diploma in Education (PGDE) from an accredited institution. The PGDE should have been completed with at least an average grade of B.

Master of Science with Education (M.Sc. (Ed)) in Chemistry, Biology, or Mathematics

  • Direct Entry: A Bachelor’s degree in Education (e.g., B.Sc. (Ed.) or B.Ed. (Sc.)) from an accredited institution with a minimum GPA of 2.7. Applicants must have studied the chosen specialization (Chemistry, Biology, or Mathematics) during their undergraduate degree.
  • Equivalent Entry: A Bachelor of Science degree with a background in Chemistry, Biology, or Mathematics, along with a Postgraduate Diploma in Education (PGDE) from an accredited institution. The PGDE should have been completed with at least an average grade of B.

Admission Regulations

  • Application Process: Application forms can be obtained from the Registrar’s office or downloaded from the DUCE website. Duly filled-in application forms must reach the Registrar’s office by the date indicated in the advertisement for the particular academic year. Only applicants who meet the required minimum entry qualifications should submit application forms.
  • Selection and Registration: Only applicants who meet the minimum entry requirements may be selected. Selected candidates are required to report for an orientation program which normally takes place during the week preceding the beginning of the new academic year. The deadline for registration of first-year students shall be two weeks from the first date of the orientation week, while for continuing students it will be the Friday of the second week after the beginning of a semester.
  • Fee Payment: Admission shall be granted to students only if they produce evidence of payment of at least half of the fee, which is directly payable to the Institute.
  • Regulations and By-laws: All students must conform entirely to Institute regulations and by-laws. No student shall be allowed to change a program they have been admitted to, except in special circumstances.
  • Name Changes and Postponements: No change of names by students will be entertained during study. Postponement of studies after the commencement of an academic year will only be allowed under special circumstances, and permission will be granted upon producing satisfactory evidence of the reasons for postponement.
