The Higher Education Students’ Loans Board (HESLB) plays a crucial role in facilitating access to higher education in Tanzania by providing financial support to students. As we approach the academic year 2024/2025, several significant developments have emerged regarding student loans, application processes, and financial allocations. This article aims to provide an overview of the latest HESLB news, highlighting key updates and changes that prospective students should be aware of.

Opening of Loan Application Season

On June 6, 2024, Dr. Bill Kiwia, the Executive Director of HESLB, announced the commencement of the loan application season for the 2024/2025 academic year. The application window opened on June 1 and will remain open until August 31, 2024. This year, HESLB has introduced five essential guidelines for loan allocation across various educational levels, including Bachelorā€™s degrees, Diplomas, and Postgraduate Diplomas in Legal Practice. These guidelines are accessible on the HESLB website and are designed to ensure that applicants understand the requirements before submitting their applications

Increased Financial Allocation

For the upcoming academic year, the Tanzanian government has allocated TZS 787 billion for student loans and grants, an increase from TZS 749.4 billion in the previous year. This funding is expected to support a total of 245,799 students, including over 88,000 first-year students who will receive TZS 284.8 billion specifically earmarked for them. The increase in funding reflects a commitment to expanding access to higher education and accommodating a growing number of applicants

First Batch of Beneficiaries Announced

On September 28, 2024, HESLB released the first list of beneficiaries for the academic year. This initial batch includes 21,509 students whose loans amount to TZS 70.78 billion. These beneficiaries comprise students pursuing Bachelorā€™s degrees, those enrolled in Law School for Practical Training, and postgraduate students. Dr. Kiwia emphasized that all loan applicants can check their loan status through their Student’s Individual Permanent Account (SIPA), which streamlines communication and reduces the need for physical visits to HESLB offices

Correction Window for Applications

In response to common challenges faced by applicants during the submission process, HESLB announced a seven-day correction window for loan applications starting September 14, 2024. This initiative allows applicants to rectify any issues identified in their submissions before final processing. However, it is crucial to note that no new applications will be accepted during this period

Ongoing Support Services

HESLB has established dedicated customer service desks to assist applicants who encounter difficulties while filling out their loan applications or require further clarification. Applicants can reach out via phone or WhatsApp for immediate assistance.Ā This proactive approach aims to enhance user experience and ensure that all eligible students can successfully navigate the application process.

Conclusion

As we look forward to the academic year 2024/2025, HESLB’s initiatives reflect a robust commitment to supporting higher education in Tanzania through increased funding and improved processes for loan applications. Prospective students are encouraged to familiarize themselves with the guidelines available on the HESLB website and take advantage of the extended application period. With these measures in place, HESLB continues to play a pivotal role in enabling students to pursue their educational aspirations without financial barriers.
