Position Overview

Abdulrahman Al-Sumait University (SUMAIT) is seeking a qualified Legal Counsel to manage and oversee the provision of legal services for the University. This role is critical in ensuring the University’s legal rights are protected and that operations remain within legal boundaries. The Legal Counsel will provide strategic guidance and support to senior University administrators on a broad range of legal matters.

Qualifications

  • Education: Bachelor’s degree in law or post-graduate studies accredited by a law school.
  • Experience: At least 3 to 4 years of experience directly related to the responsibilities of the role.
  • Skills: Strong organizational and time management skills, good research skills, knowledge of various legal contracts, documentation, and processes.
  • Knowledge: In-depth understanding of legal specialties such as tax law, real estate, environmental justice, and criminal law.

Roles and Responsibilities

  • Legal Counsel: Guide on legal matters relevant to the University, including state laws, policies, procedures, and regulations.
  • Document Review: Review and interpret contracts, leases, MoUs, and other legal documents; recommend necessary revisions.
  • Representation: Represent or oversee the representation of the University in judicial and administrative proceedings and negotiations.
  • Outside Counsel: Select and retain outside counsel as needed for legal opinions or litigation.
  • Supervision: Supervise the legal work of other attorneys, paralegals, and outside counsel.
  • Training: Provide training to the campus community on various legal issues.
  • Professional Development: Maintain professional growth through seminars, workshops, and affiliations.
  • Miscellaneous: Perform other job-related duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Required

  • Competent legal advice and counsel on a range of legal and policy issues.
  • Understanding of laws and regulations impacting university policy and operations.
  • Ability to analyze and prepare legal opinions.
  • Knowledge of contract law and legal documentation procedures.
  • Familiarity with community legal resources.
