Staff Training on Geographic Information Systems (GIS) at Fairtrade Africa

Context to the Assignment
New international market regulations, notably the EU Deforestation Regulation (EUDR), impact smallholder cocoa and coffee producers. Effective from December 31, 2024, this regulation requires companies doing business in the EU to ensure that their agricultural products do not contribute to deforestation or forest degradation. Smallholder farmers, especially in countries with inadequate infrastructure and traceability, face challenges meeting these requirements. Fairtrade Africa (FTA) aims to support these smallholder producers in East Africa by enhancing their Geographic Information Systems (GIS) capabilities.
Scope of the Assignment
- Training Program Development:
- Develop a customized training program covering:
- Cartography basics
- Spatial analysis
- Mapping
- Practical GIS applications for EUDR compliance
- Land use monitoring
- Deforestation tracking
- GPS/mobile application data collection
- Develop a customized training program covering:
- Training Provision:
- Deliver a 4-day training session with practical examples relevant to the coffee and cocoa sectors.
- Include interactive sessions with case studies and simulations.
- Provide training materials, documentation, and post-training support.
- Support and Mentoring:
- Offer post-training support and technical assistance for a pre-agreed duration to address challenges in applying GIS tools.
- Evaluation and Assessment:
- Evaluate to assess the effectiveness of the training program using appropriate tools.
Deliverables
- Training Curriculum: Curriculum, materials, and documentation.
- Completion of Training Sessions: Delivery of the training sessions.
- Post-Training Report: Includes participant feedback and recommendations.
Timelines
- Inception and Planning: 2 weeks for detailed planning and preparation.
- GIS Training: 1 week for delivery and skills building.
Consultant Qualifications
- Technical Expertise: Demonstrable expertise in GIS technology, particularly in agricultural contexts.
- Experience: Proven track record in delivering GIS training and mapping processes. Experience with sustainability or deforestation monitoring projects is highly desirable (overall experience of more than 5 years).
- Knowledge: Strong knowledge of the EU Deforestation Regulation (EUDR), especially regarding geo-data collection and polygon mapping requirements.
- Communication: Ability to communicate complex technical concepts to non-technical staff.
- Regional Experience: Experience working in East Africa is highly desirable.

- Expertise in GIS or applicable digital solutions for EUDR compliance.
- Ability to meet specified timelines.
